Bank swallow and its nestling

As part of the mitigation measures accompanying its Contrecœur expansion project, the Port of Montreal undertook to replace the part of bank swallows’ habitat that will be impacted by project construction.

To do so, with the help of experts, artificial nesting boxes were built outside of the construction zone, but nearby. This work was completed before construction began so that the birds could gradually acclimatize.

Together with Nicolas Bérubé from the environmental consulting firm Écogénie, which participated in the project, Julie explains the process and results of our undertaking:

This clip was produced in support of the MPA’s partnership with the Blue Metropolis Foundation, in keeping with the foundation’s mission to raise awareness of literature as a tool for social inclusion. Blue Metropolis presents the Série maritime, co-funded by the MPA. This river-themes series consists of a range of activities in classrooms and libraries on the South Shore designed to bring the wonders of the St. Lawrence River to life for young people. The clip will be added to the various complementary online content that make up this youth series.
