The MPA congratulates the 2024-2025 cohort of participants in the Smart Port challenge!

On March, 13, 2025, the awards ceremony for the 9th edition of the Smart Port Challenge was held at the CDH. Organized every year by the MPA, the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) and the engineering firm Hatch, it consists of challenging students in the Operations and Logistics Engineering program at ÉTS. The challenge for fall 2024 was to configure and model the truck entrance gate at Bickerdike Terminal to ensure maximum throughput for truck traffic on the terminal.

Of the 30 participants, two teams stood out and tied for the win, each receiving a $2,500 scholarship. Their proposed solutions include practical and innovative recommendations to optimize traffic flow, improve reception procedures and integrate new technologies, all with a view to sustainable development.

Two great firsts in this 9th edition

For the first time, a port terminal and logistics operator, QSL, was involved in both setting the challenge and choosing the winners. This collaborative partnership heralds a significant step forward by bringing the challenge closer to realities in the field and the actual needs of industry players.

Another notable first is that the trophies were awarded to a gender-balanced cohort, a big achievement in this traditionally male domain, and proof that logistics engineering is attracting a diverse new generation!

Way to go, everyone who participated! 🚀👏
