Aa strategic move in the grain sector: CPKC boosts train capacity
By optimizing its rail network, CPKC (Canadian Pacific Kansas City) can now serve clients and markets more efficiently. Over the years, unit train lengths have become significantly longer.
They averaged 112 cars a few years ago and now have up to 147 cars. This development makes it possible to:
- Maximize the use of available cars
- Improve locomotive performance
- Increase rail network efficiency
- Free up capacity across the entire rail network
Productive coordination with the Port of Montreal and Viterra
Providing a competitive advantage for freight shippers and rail operators alike, this performance is also based on strong collaboration between teams from CPKC, the Port of Montreal and Viterra, where CPKC cars are swiftly unloaded.
Sustained momentum for grain in 2025
This logistical efficiency is paying off, making it possible to meet current historical volumes in the grain sector. Given that 2024 was already exceptional for the grain sector, with volumes 20% higher than in 2023, this momentum has continued at an equally promising pace since the start of 2025.
In April alone, over 530,000 tonnes of grain moved through the Port of Montreal—a huge volume for the start of the year and comparable to the volumes usually handled at the end of the year after harvest.
A logistical achievement that benefits the entire supply chain!
