This new study is an update of the data published in 2012 and provides a comprehensive overview of the transportation and logistics sector. In a post-pandemic economic context marked by high inflation, labour challenges and the climate crisis, it provides an understanding of the evolution and major trends of the transport sector, and is a valuable tool to better grasp and envision the future.

Highlights include a 10,000-job increase in the logistics sector in a decade, $8.7 billion in economic benefits, and a marked upswing in shipping and the container sector.

“The Port of Montreal is at the heart of both a highly efficient supply chain and a first-class intermodal network that not only connect Greater Montreal to over 140 countries around the world, but also supply consumer goods and raw materials to the population and businesses at large”

“Marine cargo shipping in Greater Montreal has grown substantially over the past ten years, up 19% from 2011 The Port is getting close to its full container handling capacity, which is why we are planning our major expansion project in Contrecœur. All types of cargo are handled in Greater Montreal, namely liquid bulk, dry bulk, grain and non-containerized cargo, as well as the container sector. These containers come from or are exported to the whole world, with Northern Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean basin in the lead. They contain mostly food, forestry and metal products, as well as grains and cereals.

The Port of Montreal is at the heart of both a highly efficient supply chain and a first-class intermodal network that not only connect Greater Montreal to over 140 countries around the world, but also supply consumer goods and raw materials to the population and businesses at large,” said Martin Imbleau, President and Chief Executive Officer of the MPA and Chair of the CargoM Board of Directors, in a press release.
