Olin chooses the Port of Montreal as its logistics gateway for PVC in Ontario and Quebec
How do you turn a procurement challenge into a great example of operational success? The recent collaboration between Olin, the Port of Montreal and Proactive Warehousing proves the competitive advantage of strategic positioning at the core of an efficient logistics network.
A well-located port up for a logistics challenge
When Olin, a top name in the chemical industry, started thinking about a new way to import PVC into Eastern Canada, the Port of Montreal stood out as a logical option. In addition to its location at the hub of a thriving logistics ecosystem, the Port offered the twofold advantage of valuable intermodal connectivity—both rail and road—and proximity to key markets in Quebec and Ontario.
However, for the project to work, there was a challenge: Olin needed specialized transshipment and warehousing solutions for its high value-added product, polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
The Port of Montreal as a strategic facilitator
To meet these requirements, Olin turned to the Port of Montreal's development team for advice and to logistics partners who could meet its standards. The team proved to be a catalyst, introducing Olin to several key players in its network with the expertise needed to take on the challenge.
“A port without an ecosystem is just a dock, and the Port of Montreal is fortunate to have a robust ecosystem of transshipment facilities, warehouses and specialized services in both Greater Montreal and the Greater Toronto Area.”
– Alain Berard, Director, Development and International Relations, Port of Montreal
A customized solution in Ontario
Among the options available, Olin chose Proactive Supply Chain Group to manage the Toronto leg of its supply chain. The warehouse located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) proved to be ideally located. Through close collaboration, a customized transshipment solution was developed to meet the specific requirements of Olin's product.
“The cooperation with Proactive made it possible for us to implement a smooth, secure supply chain that’s tailor-made for our product.”
– Chris Sextro, Olin representative“Our goal was clear: deliver a customized, fast and reliable solution. Through a collaborative approach with Olin, we optimized every link in their Toronto logistics chain.”
– Geoff Lewis, Proactive representative
A seamless supply chain, from dock to factory
Olin's PVC import operations now transit smoothly through the Port of Montreal, reliably serving markets in Quebec and Ontario. The MPA is proud to be part of an expanded logistics network that can adapt its service offering to efficiently serve its clients.
