Crowd attending Contrecoeur open house
These meetings, held in Contrecoeur and Verchères, provided an opportunity to update the public on the progress of the project, to recall the anticipated impacts and planned mitigation measures, and to continue the dialogue with the local community. Around 200 citizens participated in the open houses, where experts and managers from the MPA spoke on various themes, including the Port of Montreal and the importance of the project, environmental impact management, relations with the community and First Nations, transportation and economic benefits.

Planning of the events

The open houses took place in the evening (between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.) in central locations in the cities of Contrecoeur (local multipurpose centre) and Verchères (community centre). Seven thematic stations were available to the participants, in which there were MPA resources ready to share information about the project and answer questions regarding:

  • The Port of Montreal
  • The New Container Terminal Project in Contrecoeur
  • Environment
  • Community
  • Transportation
  • Economic benefits
  • Your opinion

Invitations to participate to these events were shared via local media in the Contrecoeur area, social media (including those of the cities of Contrecoeur and Verchères), and personalized letters.

Communication tools

Various communication tools have been prepared and updated for these open houses. Thematic maps and posters, key information to remember for each of the stations, as well as visual presentations and images were used. These tools can be accessed here (some tools are presented in French and can be provided in English upon request):

Participant satisfaction

Of the participants who responded to an opinion survey, 95% were satisfied with the format of the evenings, the information obtained, the opportunity to share opinions on the project and the general communications of the MPA about the Contrecoeur project.

Engagement of MPA employees

Several teams from the MPA were mobilized to prepare the open houses. In total, some 30 people lent a hand in the development of various communication tools, supported by external collaborators, and in the animation of the thematic stations during the evenings. The Contrecoeur Project Management Office, Public Affairs and Community Relations, Geomatics and Information Assets, Human Resources, as well as Operations and Asset Management provided resources to make these meetings a success.

Upcoming public events

Other information activities on the expansion project will be organized by the MPA in the coming months. The public will again be invited to participate and meet our experts.
