MPA to plant 40,000 plants, trees and shrubs in Contrecoeur
In June, the Port of Montreal kicked off the first phase of its huge reforestation plan, which calls for 40,000 plantings over about 20 hectares.
Together with the City of Contrecoeur the first phase of planting (18,000 plants over 10 hectares) took place in the Contrecoeur agricultural park, featuring tracts of deciduous and coniferous forests, fruit-growing bushes, willow stands and planted wildlands. The trees planted include fir, larch, spruce, pine, poplar and red maple.
The MPA completed this project with a contractor specializing in the management of waterways and natural environments, Aménagements Natur'Eau-Lac Inc., as part of its compensation obligations for the loss of forest habitats related to developing its new container terminal. Subsequent plantings are set for autumn 2024 and 2025.
At the same time, a different planting project was carried out at Cartier-Richard Park in support of local development. The MPA took part in the City of Contrecoeur’s efforts to beautify the park, recently devastated by the emerald ash borer, calling on the expertise of its partner Aménagements Natur'Eau-Lac Inc.
