Our catalyzers

Bring people together to build

A leader that unifies and builds trust

The Port of Montreal's past, present and future are directly linked to the quality of the relationships it develops and maintains with its various partners and communities.

From immediate neighbours to members of the marine community in the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes corridor, to those who give life to the port territory and the Indigenous Peoples along the river, the Montreal Port Authority is counted on to play a leadership role in improving the social, environmental and economic impact of the Port of Montreal.

To achieve this, the MPA will:

Improve the port’s community impact

The MPA is aware, successful and committed to social impact, but new generations (especially Gen Z) are demanding that companies get more involved.

Specifically, we will:

Support sustainable interventions in communities

The MPA is committed to making sustainable development the heart of its activities. Consequently, we intend to invest at least 1.5% of our fixed assets annually in various interventions in the communities and the city-port interface. This action is part of our resolve to support our neighbouring communities and anchor ourselves more sustainably in the urban fabric. This will be achieved through agreements and partnerships with municipalities and other Port partners..

Affirm the MPA's commitment to Indigenous Peoples

The MPA is privileged to work constructively with Indigenous Peoples through its Contrecœur expansion project. The MPA wants to do more to include Indigenous Peoples in all our activities in a spirit of collaboration and reconciliation.

Deploy a new strategy for relations with our communities

The MPA is committed to maintaining good relations with its communities. This is why we will deploy a new strategy that will establish a revised investment policy as well as new programs for activating donations, sponsorships and commitments to the communities

Promote employee engagement in our communities

Community engagement is an integral part of the MPA's identity. To foster and solidify our employees' commitment to the causes that are important to them, we will establish a new volunteer support program.

Mobilize port partners

More than anything, we want to better engage our port partners on issues that affect society. To do so, we will set up a committee composed of our main port partners to intensify their mobilization around specific social and environmental issues. The committee will then be able to pursue several activities such as identifying common initiatives and deploying incentives to encourage and recognize good behaviour by port partners.

Develop and deploy a port community outreach program

Since the MPA already commands high visibility, we will build on this reputation by deploying a broader communications program to raise the profile of the entire port community.

Open and beautify port facilities and city-port interfaces

The port's urban footprint presents great opportunities to improve the city-port interface over a long period of time, and gradually open the port area to the public.

Specifically, we will:

Deploy the first initiatives of the city-port interface study

There is considerable willingness and opportunity to improve the city-port interface over a long period of time and gradually open the port area to the public.  To this end, we will be conducting a series of interventions to provide an improved experience for those interested in making the most of the interface between the city and the Port.

For example, our first interventions include revitalizing urban spaces by greening them, developing port observation points and lengthening the embankment along Viau East.

Hold events that make people want to explore port spaces

To raise awareness of the MPA, we will more frequently hold events that give the public a chance to discover and learn about our spaces. To do so, we will launch specific annual programming, and at the same time, identify partners and producers for the Grand Quay's and other available outdoor spaces.

Develop and deploy a new educational program targeting youth aged 7 to 24

The MPA cares about youth. This is why we will create and develop a new welcome program specifically for the youngest clienteles, i.e., elementary, secondary and post-secondary students. Our program will also provide access to port spaces and experts.

Collaborate on the St. Lawrence corridor

Global supply chains are being restructured. At the same time, shipping lines and cargo owners are looking for better, cheaper routes, while wanting to accelerate the decarbonization process. Collaboration between ports could strengthen the competitiveness of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes corridor in addition to offering new business opportunities.

Specifically, we will:

Deploy collaborative governance bringing together the MPA, the TRPA and the QPA

Collaboration is one of our core values. This is why we are convinced that pooling efforts between the Port of Montreal and those of Quebec City and Trois-Rivières could substantially improve the competitiveness of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes corridor against increasingly better organized and financed competition.

In a legislative environment conducive to collaboration, working groups to identify and help implement joint initiatives in the marine industry will be implemented.
