Major projects

In 2024, the MPA undertook large-scale investments for a total budget of $106.9 million, exemplifying its determination to prepare the future of the Port of Montreal. These flagship projects, ranging from the Contrecœur expansion to initiatives to strengthen the fluidity, capacity and sustainability of our infrastructure, attest to a resolute commitment to optimize and secure all port operations in the face of future challenges.

The Port of Montreal's Contrecœur expansion project achieved a number of milestones in 2024.

As announced at the end of 2023, a new way to execute the project was introduced. Under this approach, land-based works would be carried out by a private partner, while in-water works (including dock construction and dredging) would be carried out by the MPA with support from partners.

To this end, in February an agreement was signed with the consortium Constructeurs Terminal de Contrecœur Grand Projet (CTCGP), formed by Pomerleau and Aecon, to design the in-water works using a collaborative design-build (collaborative DB) approach.

At the same time, the procurement process continued for land-based works, with a view to awarding a DBFO (Design-Build-Finance-Operate) contract over the course of 2025.

Flow and capacity

In 2024, the MPA revitalized its infrastructure by launching and completing strategic projects to improve the smooth flow and capacity of its operations. From redeveloping the CanEst terminal to rehabilitating the Pie-IX railway bridge and optimizing the rail network, these initiatives not only enhance operational efficiency and safety, but also prepare the port to meet the demands of a growing market.

The MPA invests to ensure that essential Port of Montreal infrastructure is maintained and able to last. Rehabilitation projects, such as repairing Berth 28 and the Grand Quay parking lot and modernizing railway equipment and water supply networks, help maintain a safe and efficient environment. These efforts continue to guarantee the longevity of the facilities while optimizing their long-term operation.
