The year 2023 marked a major turning point for our marine transport organization. It was the long-awaited year of solid achievements, the result of years of planning, design and construction. We completed several emblematic projects, fully embodying our vision for the future. Yet this year was much more than that. It was the foundation we laid for new projects, new avenues and new visions. In short, a year that set our sights firmly on new horizons.

Benefits and traffic

With a total volume of 35.3 million tonnes of goods handled in 2023, the Port of Montreal reported a slight decline of 1.8% compared to last year. This decrease was mainly due to the container sector, which accounted for 37% of total volume with 13.1 million tonnes, and which was strongly impacted by the global economic slowdown.

Trading with the world

To fulfill its vital mission to sustainably connect communities, the Port of Montreal draws on an extensive network of multimodal connections. It is connected to more than 140 countries through six of the world’s largest shipping lines, including COSCO, CMA-CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, MSC and OOCL, and to all of North America through its direct links with a vast highway and rail network stretching into the U.S. Midwest. Its facilities include five container terminals, two cruise terminals, 12 dry bulk berths, six liquid bulk terminals, a grain terminal and a grain containerization terminal.

Strategic Plan 2023-2027

The Strategic Plan 2023-2027 makes connecting communities sustainably the core of its raison d’être, with the goal of making the Port of Montreal a more resilient, smarter and sustainable corridor. Implemented through an inclusive process, after four months of external consultations as part of an extensive participatory planning process, it is intended to reflect the aspirations and concerns of the entire Greater Montreal port and logistics ecosystem. Built around six major priorities and 21 targeted actions, it redefines the vision, mission and values of the Montreal Port Authority.

Major projects

The year 2023 was marked by the successful conclusion of several major projects at the Port of Montreal, reflecting its vision for the future. The Contrecœur expansion project is redesigning the logistics ecosystem to support future economic growth. With a total of $74.8 million invested in 2023, the Port of Montreal’s infrastructure projects exemplify its commitment to sustainable development and a more streamlined, greener supply chain.

Sustainable development

Sustainable development remains a key priority for the MPA. The year 2023 marked a decisive turning point in this area, with the announcement of ambitious objectives aimed to reduce the carbon footprint, adapt to climate change, protect the territory and improve the city-port interface. On the strength of its best practices, the Port of Montreal earned a perfect performance ranking in the Green Marine Performance Report 2022.
