Benefits and traffic

The Port of Montreal reported an overall increase of 5.8% in volumes compared to last year, with a total of 36 million tonnes of cargo passing through its facilities. The container sector accounted for 40% of total volumes with 14.4 million tonnes, liquid bulk for 36% with 13 million tonnes, and dry bulk for 24% with 8.2 million tonnes.

Major projects: Investing to prepare the future

Ensuring the quality of services and the sustainability of port facilities remained a top priority for the MPA. As the Port of Montreal approaches its maximum land-based container handling capacity, the MPA continued to prepare for the future by pursuing its large-scale expansion project in Contrecœur. At the same time, on the Island of Montreal, investments of $117.4 million were made during the year, thereby helping to improve both supply chain fluidity and the city-port interface.

Sustainable development

Sustainable development is fully in line with the values that have underpinned the strategic vision and management of MPA activities for many decades. As a signatory to the AIVP 2030 Agenda of the Worldwide Network of Port Cities, the Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonization and the Montreal Climate Partnership, the MPA has implemented a number of practical actions. It has also forged international partnerships aimed at protecting the environment and biodiversity, reducing its carbon footprint, soundly managing its assets and continuing to integrate harmoniously into the urban fabric.
