Confronting the COVID-19 crisis
To stay the course through the turmoil, the MPA instituted a series of measures to ensure the health and safety of its workers. It used artificial intelligence to streamline the processing of priority cargoes and it made solidarity and collaboration the heart of its action plan.
The year 2020 saw a decrease in tonnes of cargo handled across all sectors. The MPA posted a drop in total traffic approaching 14% compared to 2019 volumes, with 35.1 million tonnes of cargo handled.
Temporarily halted in the spring following government directives, the MPA’s repair and construction work resumed in May.

In line with the MPA’s core value of international cooperation, the various teams continued their work to strengthen partnership ties with other national and international ports for the purpose of sharing best practices, exchanging information and deepening trade ties.
From actively participating in the recovery in a sustainable development framework and protecting biodiversity to supporting community organizations, the Port of Montreal has ramped up its events and actions.

The Gold-Headed Cane was awarded to Captain Qin Xiao Fei, Master of the Exeborg, which reached the Port of Montreal on January 3, 2020.
A blockade affected CN operations and impacted the flow of goods at the Port of Montreal. MPA teams and partners kept serving much of its clientele by using the intermodal network, particularly trucking.
Sylvie Vachon received the Grand Bâtisseur award at the 2020 Tourisme Montréal Distinction Awards, which celebrates the achievements of Montreal companies and key players in the tourism industry. The award honoured the Port of Montreal’s Grand Quay and observation tower project.
Oumar Diallo was appointed to the MPA Board of Directors.
The Port of Montreal joined eighteen other members of the Port Authorities Roundtable in signing a joint declaration recognizing the COVID-19 pandemic as a serious global crisis with far-reaching impact on many fronts, including global trade.
Together with CargoM, Scale AI and IVADO Labs, the MPA began partnering in an artificial intelligence project to identify and prioritize containers carrying cargo deemed critical by government authorities.
The MPA CEO was invited to sit on the federal COVID-19 Supply Council.
The Chamber of Marine Commerce named the Port of Montreal a Marine Industry Trusted Partner for COVID-19 for its exemplary health and safety during a pandemic.
The History of Ships exhibition returned to the Grand Quay for the summer to offer visitors a foray into the rich history of the Port, in compliance with COVID-19 health measures.
The MPA received the Concilivi seal awarded by the provincial NPO, the Réseau pour un Québec famille.
Dockworkers and checkers held a four-day work stoppage, followed in August by an unlimited general strike. The strike ended on August 21 with the announcement of a seven-month truce signed between the dockworkers’ union CUPE 375 and the Maritime Employers Association.
The Request for Qualifications for the design and construction of Contrecœur Terminal was issued. Five consortia submitted their applications to qualify for an eventual Request for Proposals.
The MPA announced a major partnership with the UPA Federation as part of the ALUS Montérégie environmental program.
Paul Bird became the new Vice-President of the Contrecœur project.
General cargo ship the Claude A. Desgagnés sailed from the Port of Montreal bound for Toronto, the first instance of container cabotage in over a decade.
Martin Imbleau was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Montreal Port Authority. Succeeding Sylvie Vachon, who announced her retirement at the end of 2020, he officially took office on January 1, 2021.
The MPA joined forces with the Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal CIUSS, the City of Montreal and Accueil Bonneau homeless shelter to help people facing homelessness during the cold season by opening Terminal 1 of the Grand Quay.
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada issued its interim report on the proposed container terminal project in Contrecœur.
The MPA signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Port of Marseille Fos.
Viau Terminal 2 was officially inaugurated with the arrival of the MSC Sao Paulo, a container ship with a 4,588 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) capacity. The terminal can now handle 600,000 TEUs annually.
The MPA joined the Montreal Climate Partnership, announced as part of the City of Montreal’s Climate Change Plan.
