New working group improving city-port interface and cohabitation
Press release
Montreal, April 7, 2025 — The Montreal Port Authority (MPA), in collaboration with representatives of the municipal, provincial and federal offices of elected officials working in proximity to Port of Montreal facilities, today announced the creation of a working group tasked with improving the interface and cohabitation between the Port of Montreal and nearby neighbourhoods. This project is a shared pledge to attune port activities and city life.
A collective mandate to strengthen cohabitation
Recognizing the importance of Montreal’s port character, the collective mandate of the working group is to maximize the benefits of healthy coexistence for neighbouring communities. Members will pay particular attention to the importance of upstream collaboration on projects and initiatives aimed at improving cohabitation between the port and the city, whether in terms of infrastructure or facilities, managing disturbances or urban planning adjacent to Port territory.
This means that the main objective for all stakeholders involved is to engage in proactive and ongoing dialogue in the interest of prioritizing and planning future projects and initiatives together.
The committee’s first meeting, held on March 10, 2025, addressed several possible projects that are already being evaluated. The working group makes it a priority to integrate the needs of people residing near port territory when prioritizing projects. This forum will also serve as a platform to act on opportunities for improvement stemming from the community.
Needs of residents form the hub of discussions
The committee’s next meetings will be held on the same basis: identify and share new opportunities, address local residents’ concerns and foster harmonious cohabitation.
This is why the group brings together representatives from all the boroughs and authorities working on or near Port territory, and from all levels of government:
- Municipal: the Ville de Montréal-Est, the borough of Mercier—Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and the Ville de Montréal through the economic development team
- Provincial: the electoral districts of Pointe-aux-Trembles and Camille-Laurin
- Federal: the ridings of Laurier-Sainte-Marie, Hochelaga and Pointe de l’île
