The MPA honoured to host the christening of the N/C Mia Desgagnés

The MPA was very honoured indeed to host the christening and inauguration of the N/C Mia Desgagnés, the world’s first dual-fuel powered polar class chemical oil tanker. This event was held today at the Port of Montreal’s new cruise terminal.

The Mia Desgagnés joins the Damia Desgagnés in the next generation fleet at the cutting edge of technology that can be fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Within less than a year of each other, the christening of these two vessels was celebrated at the Port of Montreal.

Invited to speak at the event, MPA President and CEO Sylvie Vachon said: "The commissioning of this new vessel shows once again that the marine and port communities are taking concrete action to reduce their environmental footprint. The use of LNG is without a doubt part of the industry’s outlook for the future."

It was in this context that, last August, the Port of Montreal together with Énergir and Desgagnés set up an LNG supply system to refuel these vessels with this less emissive fuel. It is a first for a port in Quebec to provide such a system to cargo ships. This system is available to all shipowners in Quebec who choose Montreal as a destination port. The N/C Damia and Mia Desgagnés are the first vessels to be able to benefit from this.

"I congratulate Desgagnés on this state-of-the-art vessel and its leadership in sustainable development," added Ms. Vachon. "Without hesitation, you tangibly invest to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment. A big bravo!"
