The MPA shines in Green Marine's 2016 performance report

The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) received environmental certification from Green Marine in recognition of its excellence in leadership and effective environmental management in its port activities. The results were presented at GreenTech 2017, Green Marine’s annual conference, held on May 31 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Green Marine also took the opportunity to celebrate its 10th anniversary as North America’s environmental certification program for the marine industry.

The self-evaluation covered the period from January 1 to December 31, 2016. The MPA distinguished itself among Green Marine’s 36 member ports by achieving the highest average, continuing its tradition of staying in the top tier of port authorities contributing to sustainable development.

“This excellent performance shows our ongoing commitment to shoulder our environmental leadership in North America’s marine industry and to reduce our ecological footprint by walking the talk,” said Sylvie Vachon, President and CEO of the MPA and newly elected to the Green Marine Board of Directors.

For Claude Deschambault, Environment Director at the MPA: “This result is due to a team effort that involved every department of the MPA.” Each department contributed in its respective field to fulfill the environmental program’s requirements comprising about 100 performance indicators.

Green Marine’s 2016 Performance Report, which includes the results from the MPA and the other participants in the environmental program, is available online here.

The Prime Minister of Belgium visits the Port of Montreal

It was an honour for the management team of the Montreal Port Authority (MPA), along with several port partners, to welcome a Belgian diplomatic delegation led by Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel on June 15.

MPA President and CEO Sylvie Vachon took the opportunity to offer a tour of the Port of Montreal to the Prime Minister, who was joined for the occasion by the Ambassador of Belgium to Canada, Raoul Delcorde, the Ambassador of Canada to Belgium, Olivier Nicoloff, and the Consul General of Belgium in Montreal, Hubert Roisin.

It is worth pointing out that the Belgian Port of Antwerp is one of the Port of Montreal’s major partners. A cooperative agreement between the two ports was signed in March 2013 and renewed in April 2016.

Several partners and clients of the Port, including MSC, CSL, Empire, Termont, Fednav, Cerescorp, CargoM and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) joined the tour.
