In 2015, the Association of Canadian Port Authorities broke with tradition by awarding its prestigious Medal of Merit not to an individual, but to two major national companies, rail carriers CN and CP. Every year, the Medal of Merit recognizes its recipient’s outstanding work in the marine transportation industry.
“I sincerely congratulate and thank CN and CP for their great contribution to the success of us all,” said Sylvie Vachon, President and CEO of the Port of Montreal, at the awarding of the Medal of Merit. “The success of the Port of Montreal and its unique model owes a lot to the two recipients, to their topnotch rail service that enables us to increase performance at the Port and to provide value-added services to our clients.”
In point of fact, the role of these two rail companies in the operations of Canadian ports is mission-critical. Together, they represent a combined network of 48,000 km of Class 1 railroads that connect key corridors and gateways across the country. Their impact is considerable. They reduce congestion, improve intermodal connections and help limit greenhouse gas emissions.
In recent years, CN established cooperation agreements with all major ports and intermodal terminal operators in Canada,” said Michael Farkouh, Vice-President Eastern Region at CN. “These agreements create faster and more reliable supply chains and are generating positive responses from international shipping lines and their customers.”
For Timothy Marsh, Senior Vice-President Sales and Marketing at CP, “this award is a testament to our relationship with ports and a reminder that by working together on our customers’ behalf, everyone benefits.”
CN has always been headquartered in Montreal while CP has been there for a great many years.
The Medal of Merit has been awarded annually by the ACPA since 1975. Past recipients include Madeleine Paquin, President and CEO of Logistec Corporation, the Honourable David Collenette, former federal Minister of Transport, Michel Pouliot, President of the Canadian Marine Pilots’ Association, Jack Leitch, Chairman of Upper Lakes Group, Blair McKeil, Chairman and CEO of McKeil Marine, and the late Captain Al Soppitt, former President and CEO of the Port of Saint John.
