a welcome maritime strategy
On June 29, more than 200 people were at Iberville Passenger Terminal on Alexandra Pier to take part in the launch of the first ever Quebec Maritime Strategy. There to welcome this announcement prominent figures in the marine transportation industry, the business world and politics. And of course, lots of journalists.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard himself kicked off this extensive project to develop Quebec’s marine sector. For the occasion, he was joined by four of his ministers: Robert Poëti, Minister of Transport and Minister Responsible for the Montreal Region; Jean D’Amour, Minister for Transport and the Implementation of the Maritime Strategy; Dominique Vien, Minister of Tourism; and François Blais, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Research and Minister Responsible for Recreation and Sport. Montreal Mayer Denis Coderre, who is very involved in several Port-related projects, was also present.
These policymakers all appeared onstage against a backdrop of blue cranes at Empire terminal and the red exterior of the Oceanex Avalon. Choosing to hold the official launch of the Quebec Maritime Strategy here in Montreal clearly showed what a pivotal role the Port of Montreal plays in this strategy and the Quebec economy.
The Port of Montreal is a world-class business platform and the largest port in Eastern Canada. It is connected to more than 140 countries and is a real economic force not only for Montreal but also for Quebec and the rest of Canada.
To seize growth opportunities, the marine industry must work more loosely than ever with all the actors in the logistics chain, ranging from shipowners to rail and road carriers, importers, exporters and terminal operators, through to educational institutions and the workforce.
The Maritime Strategy will definitely strengthen the collaborative effort that is already underway, thanks in large part to the unifying work of CargoM, the Logistics and Transportation Metropolitan Cluster of Montreal. Only by working together can we bring our projects to life, for the benefit not not only the marine industry but our entire economy and every Quebecker.
No wonder the Port of Montreal heartily applauds the very first Quebec Maritime Strategy!
